PARENTS AND STUDENT SAFETY

A major concern with delays, closings or early dismissals is students who are left alone. All families should have a plan in place to ensure the proper supervision and care of their children in these situations. Families should also discuss the plan at the beginning of the school year and whenever inclement weather is a possibility. Each family member should know and be able to execute their plan.

HOW DECISIONS ARE MADE

District leaders understand that the decision to delay or close schools due to inclement weather or loss of utilities has a significant effect on all families. The following information may help families better understand the process used when making the decision:

  • Information on road conditions from the district’s transportation and maintenance staff, and reports shared by municipal and township authorities
  • Amount of accumulated snow and ice
  • Whether precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day
  • Temperature and wind chill
  • Weather predictions from satellite systems, local radar, National Weather and NOAA Weather Radio
  • Storm timing
  • Impact on the district’s bus fleet
  • Building or grounds conditions (such as whether there is electricity and/or heat)
  • Discussions with administrators from area school districts beginning the prior evening.

The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for the final decision, in consultation with the district’s administrative team and superintendents of other Greene County and neighboring school districts. The decision to delay or close is made by 5:30 a.m., so sufficient time remains to notify staff and families.

STUDENT ACTIVITY CANCELLATION

A number of factors come into play when considering whether to move forward with student activities, which are generally held in the afternoons and evenings. Factors may include:

  • Weather and road conditions, which may improve as the day progresses
  • The fact that weather conditions may vary between districts
  • Individual facility and/or site conditions.

The decision to move forward with an event or activity is made between the schools that are involved in the contests. If the middle or high school athletic contests are canceled, whether home or away, information will be posted to gocreek.org. Cancellations of other activities (non-athletic events) will be communicated to students and families by their advisors, coaches or building administrators.
