All March long, Mr. Shaw's class at Shaw Elementary has been doing their own version of March Madness, but with picture books. They started off with 16 different books in eight different categories, including Biography, Sports, and SEL. After we read both books in each category, we began voting and using a bracket to highlight our favorite books. We continued voting daily until we were down to two final books: For the Right to Learn: Malala Yousafzai's Story by Rebecca Ann Langtson-George and Escargot by Dashka Slater. The winner was announced on the last day of school before spring break. Ultimately, the students decided that the best book was For the Right to Learn: Malala Yousafzai's Story by Rebecca Ann Langtson-George. This nonfiction biography of Malala Yousafzai, who helped fight for education for all in Pakistan, was the winner. The students had a blast reading the different types of stories and voting for their favorites!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Corey Massarelli! 🌟 Meet Corey Massarelli, our dedicated, gifted intervention specialist at Parkwood, Trebein, and Valley Elementary! With 14 years in the BCS family, she brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. She has many memories throughout her career but especially loves the senior clap-out events. "It has been such a joy to see former students walk the halls and to have the honor of cheering them on and congratulating them on their graduation. The looks on their faces when they see all the students lining the halls and clapping...and when they see former teachers and are remembered and embraced and celebrated...it's just priceless!" When we asked her who had been most influential in her career, she said, "How can I just pick one?" It all began with my own first-grade teacher, Mrs. Hokanson. She is still, to this day, my favorite! That year, I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My mom and my grandma were also teachers and huge inspirations to me. All three had a deep love of children and an enthusiasm for learning that overflowed into me." In her 24th year of teaching, Corey is also grateful for her colleagues who guided and supported her journey. Corey enjoys family time, reading, DIY projects, and cheering on her kids and students in extracurricular activities outside of school. She is proud to be part of the Creek family and loves working with Beavercreek students, families, and staff. "Beavercreek means the world to me personally, as my three children have been blessed to be Valley, Ankeney, Ferguson, and BHS alumni. Our teachers truly love and care for the children of our community, and it's a gift to witness every day." 🧡🖤 We are grateful to have Corey as a part of our team! #StaffSpotlight

Over the past few weeks, Mr. Shaw's third-grade class at Shaw Elementary has been diving deep into the world of rocks and minerals! 🌍💎 They kicked off their journey by discovering how rocks are composed of minerals, and they dove into learning about the three main types of rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic To help learn about the rocks, the students even listened to some pretty catchy songs. They rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on with rock kits, comparing and contrasting different types of rocks. Then, they dove into an exciting rock lab, where they observed a whopping 15 different kinds of rocks up close!

CREEK FACT FRIDAY! Meet Roger Coy! Born on March 9, 1932 (the same year Main was built), Roger's journey through our school district is nothing short of remarkable. 🌟 Before starting his career with BCS, Roger graduated from the Main building in 1950. From bus driver to assistant superintendent, he held various roles, including secondary curriculum supervisor, assistant principal, and social studies teacher. 🚌👨‍🏫 His dedication didn't stop there - Roger's very first position was as a wrestling coach! 🤼‍♂️ After 32 years of service, he retired from BCS in 1988. Bonus Fun fact: Roger's family are descendants of Jacob Coy, after whom Coy Middle School is named. 🏫 Tomorrow is Roger's 92nd birthday. Help us wish him a very happy birthday! 🧡🖤

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Lori Howell! 🌟 Lori has been with Beavercreek City Schools for 16 years and works as a bus driver and BHS lunch monitor. She is also "Rooted" in the BCS community as a Beavercreek High School Class of 1986 Alum! During her career at BCS, she credits Sue Rex, her bus trainer with Kettering City Schools, as being the most influential person in her career. Lori started her driving career at Kettering almost 30 years ago. Her favorite memories include meeting so many wonderful coworkers and making friends with many of them. While not driving a bus or working in the cafeteria, Lori loves to spend time with her family, taking trips to the beach, gardening, and attending car shows with her husband. "I am proud to be able to live and work in such a wonderful community with so many great people. I'm lucky to call Beavercreek home, " Lori said. We are lucky to have her in our Creek family! 🧡🖤

Check out this week's "Creek Fact Friday!" Can you name these three teachers and their significance to the district? 🧡 🖤 🧡 🖤 🧡 Spoiler Alert! The image features Edward Zink, Frank Zink, and Otto Zink! Edward's legacy is honored through the naming of the Beavercreek High School Fieldhouse, Frank's in the naming of the football stadium, and Otto's name graces the gym at Ferguson Hall. The contributions of Ed, Frank, and Otto have left an indelible mark on our district. Yet, it's important to recognize that the entire Zink family has also made significant contributions. 🧡🖤 For example, the tree outside the athletic main office is in memory of the late Anton Zink. Also, Anton’s wife, Becky, has kept the scorebook for our basketball teams for 38 seasons now! Do you have a favorite Zink memory? Let us know in the comments!

Sarah has been with the district for six years and credits her students as the most influential people in her career. "Each year, they create special memories and remind me why I chose this profession. They are the reason my job is fun and exciting, and I feel incredibly fulfilled as I watch them grow." When asked what her favorite memory at BCS has been so far, she said she couldn't just pick one but that she loves all the special events like the fun run, field day, the 100th day of school, and other celebrations. "It's so much fun to step away from academics for a day, do something fun, and create special memories. Outside the classroom, Sarah enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hanging out with her puppy, Henry, listening to audiobooks, and attending Bengals' games. Sarah and her husband are Bengals season ticket holders!
