Homework & Grading Guidelines
Homework & Grading Guidelines
To ensure a consistent and meaningful approach to homework across Beavercreek City Schools, our Curriculum Improvement Council (CIC), a collaborative team of teachers and administrators representing preschool through grade 12, developed district-wide homework standards. The council reviewed educational research and best practices, gathered feedback from staff, and engaged in thoughtful discussions about the role of homework in supporting student learning.
The resulting guidelines are designed to promote consistency while allowing flexibility to meet the needs of individual students and courses. More detailed information regarding homework and grading practices can be found in building student handbooks and, at the secondary level, course syllabi.
Purpose of Homework
The purpose of homework is to provide students with opportunities to independently practice, reinforce, apply, or extend learning.
Elementary Homework Standards
- Homework is not required and is assigned at the discretion of the teacher.
- Homework assignments, regardless of subject area, should align with grade-level expectations.
- Communication regarding homework should be consistent within grade-level bands.
- Teachers should consider the diverse needs of students and differentiate homework assignments when appropriate.
Secondary Homework Standards
- Course-level consistency should be maintained regarding both the amount of homework assigned and how homework is assessed.
- Homework is not required and is assigned at the discretion of the teacher.
- Homework expectations should be clearly communicated to students and families with the goal of promoting student responsibility, organization, and independence.
