Homebound Supplemental Instruction

Homebound Supplemental Instruction (HBSI)

Homebound Supplemental Instruction (HBSI) provides educational support for students whose medical condition or disability prevents them from attending school for an extended period of time. The goal of HBSI is to help students remain engaged in their education and continue making academic progress while receiving necessary medical care.

Requesting Homebound Supplemental Instruction

To begin the HBSI process, a parent or guardian should contact their student's HBSI Building Coordinator. Upon receiving a request, the coordinator will schedule a meeting with the parent/guardian, school counselor, school nurse, and classroom teacher(s) to review the student's situation and determine whether a disability may be involved under Section 504 or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Following any necessary evaluations, the team will meet again to review the results and determine eligibility for HBSI services. If HBSI is approved, a final planning meeting will be held to establish instructional schedules, assignment expectations, accommodations, communication methods, and other supports needed to ensure student success.

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

Families play an important role in the success of Homebound Supplemental Instruction. Parents and guardians are expected to:

  • Ensure the student completes assignments and coursework between tutoring sessions.
  • Support regular attendance and participation in scheduled HBSI tutoring sessions.
  • Communicate concerns or questions with the HBSI Building Coordinator.
  • Notify the coordinator if medical issues affect the student's ability to complete assignments.
  • Monitor academic deadlines, including quarter and semester end dates.
  • Maintain regular communication with the HBSI Building Coordinator, especially if coursework may not be completed on time.
  • Submit updated medical documentation and consent forms as required.
  • Review and sign weekly attendance records provided by the HBSI tutor.
