Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

At Beavercreek City Schools, we believe that student success extends beyond academics. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) helps students develop the skills needed to understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience.

By intentionally teaching and supporting these skills, we help students thrive both in the classroom and beyond.

The Five SEL Competencies

Self-Awareness

Recognizing emotions, strengths, values, and personal goals.

Self-Management

Managing emotions, behaviors, and responsibilities effectively.

Social Awareness

Understanding and empathizing with others from diverse backgrounds.

Relationship Skills

Building and maintaining healthy relationships through communication and collaboration.

Responsible Decision-Making

Making ethical, safe, and constructive choices.

  • Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to:

    • Understand and manage emotions
    • Build healthy relationships
    • Show empathy and respect for others
    • Set and achieve goals
    • Make responsible decisions
    • Contribute positively to their communities

  • Ohio adopted K-12 Social Emotional Learning Standards to support student development across five core competencies: self-awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. 

    The standards are organized by grade bands:

    • Kindergarten–Grade 3
    • Grades 4–5
    • Grades 6–8
    • Grades 9–12

  • Beavercreek City Schools has developed a comprehensive approach to Social Emotional Learning that aligns with Ohio's SEL Standards and supports students at every grade level. QuaverReady and Character Strong SEL Curriulum is used, in addition to PAX Good Behavior Game, Social Communication books, and the YouScience College and Career Readiness platform, to help meet these standards. 

    Our curriculum maps ensure that SEL skills are intentionally taught and reinforced throughout a student's educational experience.

  • The CASEL Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework is shown as a series of concentric circles. At the center is "Social and Emotional Learning," surrounded by five interconnected competency areas: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision-Making, Relationship Skills, and Social Awareness. Encircling these competencies is a ring labeled "SEL Curriculum and Instruction," followed by a larger ring representing the school environment with "Schools" and "Classrooms." The outermost ring emphasizes broader support systems, including "Homes and Communities," "Family and Community Partnerships," and "Schoolwide Practices and Policies," illustrating that students' social and emotional development is supported through coordinated efforts across classrooms, schools, families, and communities.

    To build on our areas of strength and improve areas of need, we assess our students in their social and emotional learning during the school year. This is done through a survey/assessment tool created by Panorama Education. Children in grades three through twelve complete an online survey in class on the following areas:  Self-Management, Social Awareness, Emotional Regulation, Self-Efficacy, Supportive Relationships, and Perseverance.

  • Part of the social emotional learning standards includes allowing studenst the opportunity to apply their learning and address real world issues through service learning. Each year, Beavercreek City Schools selects a service learning theme that promotes creating a culture focused on building the skills and attitudes necessary to be good citizens. The 2026 service learning theme is One Mission. Students, staff, and community members will come together to support one mission. Throughout the year, they will participate in various service learning projects, activities, and fundraisers to support One Mission.
