Literacy Support

Introduction

Reading Specialists in Beavercreek City Schools provide small group instruction to support the specific literacy needs of readers and writers in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades.

Our district uses a variety of assessments to identify which students would benefit most from intervention, including, but not limited to,  Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), Acadience, and other reading and writing measures.

Grounded in evidence-based research, the National Reading Panel identified five core pillars of effective reading instruction—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. These components form the foundation for successful literacy development and guide our commitment to helping every reader thrive.

Reading Specialists tailor instruction to the unique needs of each group, using the five pillars of literacy as their guide. All of our specialists are trained in Orton-Gillingham  and UFLI, and use Pioneer Valley's Phonics Launch to support every learner.

Families receive progress reports in January and May to celebrate growth and stay informed along the way.

When students meet their program goals, they transition out of the program — a milestone worth celebrating! Successful intervention builds not only stronger literacy skills, but also self-confidence and a growing love of reading and writing. Our goal is to build a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

Reading Specialists are available for in-person and phone conferences at parents’ request.  Each year, our Title 1 staff invites families district-wide to attend a Family Literacy event in the fall and in the spring.
