Trusted Adults Activity-
During the month of March, we have been talking about who our trusted adults are; both at home and at school. This all culminated on March 22, 2024 with an activity the students look forward to every year. The students were given bead necklaces. The students were given one to keep and 1 (K-3) or 2 (4-5) to give away. The students were allowed to walk through the school on Friday morning to find their trusted adults and give them a necklace as a physical demonstration of their connection to that adult. It is an activity the students really enjoy and the teachers find really valuable. The adults are often very impressed by the kind words the students share. You have some amazing and thoughtful children!! We thank you for sharing them with us.

Recently, Main and Trebein Elementaries students were lucky to be treated to Irish dancing by Dwyer School of Irish Dance. The schools enjoyed several dances, including some by former Main and Trebein students. It was great fun to watch the dancing and learn about Irish culture. π€ππ§‘

π Staff Spotlight: Corey Massarelli! π
Meet Corey Massarelli, our dedicated, gifted intervention specialist at Parkwood, Trebein, and Valley Elementary! With 14 years in the BCS family, she brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role.
She has many memories throughout her career but especially loves the senior clap-out events. "It has been such a joy to see former students walk the halls and to have the honor of cheering them on and congratulating them on their graduation. The looks on their faces when they see all the students lining the halls and clapping...and when they see former teachers and are remembered and embraced and celebrated...it's just priceless!"
When we asked her who had been most influential in her career, she said, "How can I just pick one?" It all began with my own first-grade teacher, Mrs. Hokanson. She is still, to this day, my favorite! That year, I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My mom and my grandma were also teachers and huge inspirations to me. All three had a deep love of children and an enthusiasm for learning that overflowed into me."
In her 24th year of teaching, Corey is also grateful for her colleagues who guided and supported her journey.
Corey enjoys family time, reading, DIY projects, and cheering on her kids and students in extracurricular activities outside of school.
She is proud to be part of the Creek family and loves working with Beavercreek students, families, and staff.
"Beavercreek means the world to me personally, as my three children have been blessed to be Valley, Ankeney, Ferguson, and BHS alumni. Our teachers truly love and care for the children of our community, and it's a gift to witness every day." π§‘π€
We are grateful to have Corey as a part of our team!

Our fifth-grade students at Main Elementary recently embarked on an interstellar adventure as they delved into the mysteries of the planets in our solar system - and they did it in the most creative way imaginable: with Play-Doh!
They thought it was out of this world that the size of some planets was so small compared to the largest ones! A special shout-out of thanks to the parents who donated the colorful homemade Play-Doh! πβοΈ

CREEK FACT FRIDAY!
Meet Roger Coy! Born on March 9, 1932 (the same year Main was built), Roger's journey through our school district is nothing short of remarkable. π Before starting his career with BCS, Roger graduated from the Main building in 1950.
From bus driver to assistant superintendent, he held various roles, including secondary curriculum supervisor, assistant principal, and social studies teacher. ππ¨βπ« His dedication didn't stop there - Roger's very first position was as a wrestling coach! π€ΌββοΈ After 32 years of service, he retired from BCS in 1988.
Bonus Fun fact: Roger's family are descendants of Jacob Coy, after whom Coy Middle School is named. π«
Tomorrow is Roger's 92nd birthday. Help us wish him a very happy birthday! π§‘π€

Mrs. Crouch and Mrs. Johnson's first-grade classes at Main Elementary recently worked on how-to writing. Each student wrote down their step-by-step guide on making a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. π
We used their directions to make some sandwiches, but some made a mess! In the end, they helped give us good how-to directions on how to make the sandwich!

Spoiler Alert!
The image features Edward Zink, Frank Zink, and Otto Zink! Edward's legacy is honored through the naming of the Beavercreek High School Fieldhouse, Frank's in the naming of the football stadium, and Otto's name graces the gym at Ferguson Hall.
The contributions of Ed, Frank, and Otto have left an indelible mark on our district. Yet, it's important to recognize that the entire Zink family has also made significant contributions. π§‘π€
For example, the tree outside the athletic main office is in memory of the late Anton Zink. Also, Antonβs wife, Becky, has kept the scorebook for our basketball teams for 38 seasons now!
Do you have a favorite Zink memory? Let us know in the comments!

She is also "Rooted" in the BCS community as a Beavercreek High School Class of 1986 Alum!

While not driving a bus or working in the cafeteria, Lori loves to spend time with her family, taking trips to the beach, gardening, and attending car shows with her husband.

π Staff Spotlight: Meet Lula Kersteiner! π
If you haven't met Lu yet, you're truly missing out! Lula Kersteiner shines as the administrative assistant at Parkwood Elementary, and we're thrilled to feature her in our Staff Spotlight this week.
With nearly 25 years of dedication to our district, Lu's journey has been shaped by the wisdom and kindness of influential mentors like Sue Bamford and Vicki Keivel, who have inspired and guided her along the way.
When asked about her favorite BCS memory, she said, " After all this time, there are so many. But being 'a security blanket' for a young girl tops her list. "The girl was anxious about going to class, so she would stop in every day to hug her. I would tell her she was going to have a great day! She would smile and go to class."
We also asked her what it means to be a member of the Creek family, and she said, "The saying that it takes a village is so very true today. We may not know what is going on in a child's life, but teachers, counselors, office staff, and administrators all working together to guide our children to be good citizens, friends, and classmates is so important. I am very thankful to be part of the BCS and Parkwood community. I hope I have helped make a difference in some small way."
Beyond her dedicated work, Lu enjoys exploring the great outdoors with her husband and their beloved dog, Molly. Whether it's soaking in the beauty of Lake Erie or adventuring through Ohio and Kentucky State Park lodges, Lu's passion for travel and adventure keeps the roads hot, as her husband fondly remarks.
Thank you, Lu, for your unwavering commitment and heartfelt contributions to our school community. You truly embody the spirit of excellence and compassion that defines Parkwood Elementary! π§‘π€π§‘
