Ankeney and Coy students in the Medical Detectives class were treated to a presentation from High School Biomedical teacher Molly Wavra and phlebotomist Moriah Kendall-Joy. Students saw and interacted with a blood draw, learned about blood types, determined the blood type of a mystery person, discovered the difficulties of the shape of the cells of people with sickle cell anemia, saw their heartbeat on a screen, took their temperature, and pumped up a set of actual lungs. Students also learned about several professions related to the medical field, including phlebotomist. While interacting with all the activities, students learned about the new biomedical pathway offered for 9th-12th grade Beavercreek High School students. Freshmen interested in the biomedical field are encouraged to sign up for the first-year class Principles of Biomedical Science. There are four classes in the biomedical pathway, and any student who completes three classes with a C or higher is eligible for a $3,000 scholarship to Sinclar for any classes. Students also complete a graduation requirement by participating in the pathway. Thank you, Molly Wavra and Moriah Kendall-Joy, for spending the day with our students at Coy and Ankeny!

⚠️ We have a "Rooted Alert" with this week's Staff Spotlight! ⚠️ Not only is Sarah Hemmerich one of our outstanding 3rd-grade teachers at Shaw Elementary, but she is also a 2014 Beavercreek High School graduate! Sarah has been with the district for six years and credits her students as the most influential people in her career. "Each year, they create special memories and remind me why I chose this profession. They are the reason my job is fun and exciting, and I feel incredibly fulfilled as I watch them grow." When asked what her favorite memory at BCS has been so far, she said she couldn't just pick one but that she loves all the special events like the fun run, field day, the 100th day of school, and other celebrations. "It's so much fun to step away from academics for a day, do something fun, and create special memories. Outside the classroom, Sarah enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hanging out with her puppy, Henry, listening to audiobooks, and attending Bengals' games. Sarah and her husband are Bengals season ticket holders! And finally, Sarah said, "Being a member of the Creek family means being a part of a community that celebrates student success and growth! 🧡🖤 #BCSstaffspotlight #RootedInOurCommunity #BcrkSchools #BHSAlum

Yesterday, we spotted our dedicated DARE instructor, Officer Peffly, in action at Shaw Elementary. She was teaching a valuable lesson to Mrs. Gentil's fifth-grade students. When she visits the schools, not only do they dive into important topics, but they also add a touch of fun with a playful dress-up session! 👮‍♀️ #DARE #ShawElementary #OfficerPeffly

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Meet Lula Kersteiner! 🌟 If you haven't met Lu yet, you're truly missing out! Lula Kersteiner shines as the administrative assistant at Parkwood Elementary, and we're thrilled to feature her in our Staff Spotlight this week. With nearly 25 years of dedication to our district, Lu's journey has been shaped by the wisdom and kindness of influential mentors like Sue Bamford and Vicki Keivel, who have inspired and guided her along the way. When asked about her favorite BCS memory, she said, " After all this time, there are so many. But being 'a security blanket' for a young girl tops her list. "The girl was anxious about going to class, so she would stop in every day to hug her. I would tell her she was going to have a great day! She would smile and go to class." We also asked her what it means to be a member of the Creek family, and she said, "The saying that it takes a village is so very true today. We may not know what is going on in a child's life, but teachers, counselors, office staff, and administrators all working together to guide our children to be good citizens, friends, and classmates is so important. I am very thankful to be part of the BCS and Parkwood community. I hope I have helped make a difference in some small way." Beyond her dedicated work, Lu enjoys exploring the great outdoors with her husband and their beloved dog, Molly. Whether it's soaking in the beauty of Lake Erie or adventuring through Ohio and Kentucky State Park lodges, Lu's passion for travel and adventure keeps the roads hot, as her husband fondly remarks. Thank you, Lu, for your unwavering commitment and heartfelt contributions to our school community. You truly embody the spirit of excellence and compassion that defines Parkwood Elementary! 🧡🖤🧡
