Homework & Grading Guidelines

Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, our Curriculum Improvement Council (CIC), a collaborative team of teachers and administrators across grades preschool-12th grade, met to develop homework standards for the district. Throughout the year, the CIC team reviewed and discussed best practices related to homework, brainstormed essential questions related to homework, created a survey to get input from all staff, and used the survey results to create district homework standards.

Below you will see the purpose statement and homework standards established by the CIC. More detailed explanations can be found in the student handbooks and on the syllabi for each course at the secondary level. In the elementary handbook, information can be found beginning on the bottom of page 54.

Purpose of Homework: The purpose of homework is to provide students an educational tool to independently practice, reinforce, apply, or extend learning.

The Creek Homework Standards for Elementary:

  • Teachers are not required to assign homework. Homework assigned, regardless of the subject, should not exceed the weekly grade level expectations.

  • The method of communication to students and parents should be consistent within grade

    level bands.

  • Teachers should determine how to differentiate homework assignments to meet the needs of their students

The Creek Homework Standards for Secondary:

  • Course consistency will occur in the amount as well as the assessment of homework assignments.

  • Homework is not required to be given.  It is at the discretion of the teacher.

  • Homework will be clearly communicated to appropriate stakeholders with the goal of developing student independence
